Language

Polish, many people understand german, english is not largely diffused, although young people generally understand some of it. Many more people will understand russian, belorussian and ukrainian, but if you use them make sure they know that you are not from there. Polish people often do not like other slavians.

If in trouble you can use an english-polish automatic translator. Most barge related text will look very funny, but at least some of the basic sense of the text will be understandable.

An update from Philip Cook

I spent this morning with a very influential and efficient Polish lady telephoning key people concerned with the development and operation of the Augustowskij Canal. There is good news and bad news!

First the bad news: the canal isn't open and when it is it will probably be limited to boats of a draft of about 1m.
