Mooring Guides of the Future

You should see above an example screen shot from a barging 'path' viewed in Google Earth

This articles introduces some thoughts and examples of what the DBA moorings guide may look like in the future. The picture above is actually just a still from a moving image sequence I've created of a short sample trip down the Seine. If you have Broadband click on either of the links below to view the movie:

Dawn, catching the wave

Dawn, catching the wave
Water has come and what was but a mud berth is now a respectable draft. Just think of the forces involved in the process... let alone risking to be washed away like futile rubbish, just think of how much fuel you can waste by choosing the wrong time for moving... so remember, before crossing a tidal area always make sure you have an idea of how the water will be moving under your bilges. Dawn, waiting for the tide

Dawn, waiting for the tide
Decima is waiting, but there's no water, yet... Although this is not really about Dawn, it's quite a good pictorial explanation of what tidal area means. It basically means that you sail on a looong wave, that takes hours to come, and hours to go.  Apart from involving a serious change in the draft you can use, it also involves very strong currents. So be aware of it. Sailing in a tidal area is like... surfing on your barge. Pictures taken by John Day Farmer.
