Skûtsjes are small ships that rarely went to sea, but the Dutch trade was extending to the Baltic, all the way north to Saint Petersburg and even what is now known as a couple of nice internal lakes (Markermeer and IJsselmeer) used to be known as the sometimes cruel Zuiderzee (South sea). Commercial Dutch barges belonging to the binnenwaart (inland fleet) were built to trade on these waters, too.
