Frequently Asked Questions

Can we have a WYSIWYG interface? (like in Word processors?)

We do have it! Under text forms you always find an enable rich-text link. Just click on it and there you are. Be aware that when copying text from a word processor you are most likely to have lots of junk in it (stuff like fonts, etc). To avoid that use the Paste from Word icon. It will open a small popup window and make sure that all the unnecessary stuff gets filtered away.

How does the weather section work?

In the My account section (located in left side bar) you find a my weather tag. It lets you choose from an ever-growing list of met-stations. You can have as many monitored locations as you please, they appear in your left side bar (NOT in the WAP version, WAP is for light weight, we will have to device a "your weather" page for wap users). As far as I know new met-stations can enter the system freely, so it would be nice if anyone could lobby for ports in hotspots (say, the Channel) to become available.

How can I trim the quantity of mail I get from the site?

In your user page (my account, located in the left side bar), you find an Organic Groups Settings section. It is an important section because it trims the number of emails you receive and the topics you are keen to follow. As per default Drupal gives you an "Always send email notifications", but you can also choose "never" or "Selectively send email notification based on the checkbox for each of my group's My Subscription page" (the latter allows you to select which group's notifications you want to receive and which you do not want, much in the way different mailing-lists work). You can change your settings at any time, so you can totally or partially stop the mail flow without any need to unsubscribe.

I have a barge, what should I do to make the best of this site?

First of all, if you haven't already done it, register as a new user. Once you are thru, simply add your boat to our fleet. This gives you a homepage of yours for your boat (see an example here), where you can publish galleries (no space limits), have your own public forums, blogs, etc. It's simple, isn't it?Your homepage has a handy name, it is called bargewiki.i-iter.org/your_boat_name (it can have a number appended when there is more than one boat with the same name).Remember that you can access your homepage by WAP mobile phone, too. To do this simply enter the address bargewap.i-iter.org/your_boat_name in your WAP browser.

How to change password

There are two ways:

  • you are logged in:  on the navigation toolbar (at the left in browser mode, at the bottom of the text in WAP mode) you find a link called My account. Enter your account and edit it, among the other data you will be able to change you password
  • you are not logged in (or cannot login): under the login form (top left in browser mode, at the bottom of the text in WAP mode) you find a Request new password link. Use it and you will be emailed a link that will bring you back into the site, right on your account page, from where you will be able to set you password.

How do I add an image?
  1. Click on Create content (left bar menu) to expand it
  2. Click on Image
  3. enter your data (see also What exactly is a category?)

What exactly is a category?

Think of how reality is: you look at this page while you are sitting in

  • your barge, which is floating on a
  • waterway, which runs thru
  • one or more countries.

In nature something is always contained within something else. Yet there are several representation systems. For example, while sailing on the Danube you never change your waterway, while you often change nation. It may well be the other way round, one can sail thru hundreds of waterways and never get out of the Netherlands. To represent this, our site uses a set of three classificatory systems that identify places, waterways and boats:

  1. Place
  2. Waterway
  3. Fleet

Moreover, we have 2 systems that classify content by

  1. Topic
  2. Gallery

This second element is employed to build multimedia albums that allow users to tell stories with more than just words.Any time you create content for this site you meet a group of selectors called Categories. Using these selectors you can properly classify the information you are adding. Sometimes more than one category needs to be selected: for example, the Danube waterway needs to be included in many nations. You can ctlr-click elements to make a multiple selection. Moreover, pretty often you add something that can be used as a category, that is, it can contain other things. For example, you may want to add a waterway. Now a waterway can contain boats and marinas, it can touch towns and villages... So apart from needing a text to describe it it must be able to act as a classificatory term. Any time you have such a need you should create a category, instead of a story.Anyway, not all things that can contain other things are well described by a story. Some of them are boats (your boat does contain an engine, doesn't it?), some are events, etc. If so just create the type of content you need, then use the contact form you find at top right of any page to let the administration know what new element should become a category.

How do I make an image gallery?

A gallery is a collection of images and videos that you can comment and use to tell your stories. To make a new image gallery just:

  1. Click on Galleries
  2. Click on Add new gallery
  3. You are taken to a page called Submit Category (if you are not clear what categories are, look for an explanation in these FAQs)
  4. Select a Title and an small abstract for your gallery, maybe it's about a travel, a maintainance job, etc. Put the abstract in the Body field
  5. Click on the category information group to open it (it's under the body)
  6. Select Gallery as a container and Bargewiki galleries as a parent. Experienced users may want to nest galleries into each other; it can be a handy way to break a long trip in parts, or maybe to have a number of people telling the same trip from different points of view. To do so select a existing gallery for parent.
  7. Click on the Categories group to open it and categorise your new gallery just as anything else (see these FAQs for more help)
  8. Submit your category
  9. You are now ready to add images to your gallery
